What Next? Wirral Careers and Skills Show links students to their future

Around 1000 students from 13 local secondary schools joined Career Connect to take part in our biggest Wirral-based careers fair so far!

Career Connect took over the Hive Youth Zone in Wirral, working on behalf of Wirral Council to deliver a day packed full of careers insight.

With over 60 local employers and higher education exhibitors lining the hall, the students had the chance to discover a wide scope of pathways. Whether they were looking to continue on their education journey, delve into an apprenticeship, or start exploring the world of work, the range of stalls had all bases covered.

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Cherry Povall JP, and Mayoress Sheila Clarke MBE visited on the day.

Cllr Povall said: “Giving our borough’s future workers the chance to explore the world of work is so important.

“The What Next? Skills Show is a fantastic event, with plenty of young people attending and interacting with various stallholders and activities all centred around their futures and careers.”

From construction gear to police uniforms, recycling activities to traffic light switchboards, the variety of industries on show highlighted a plethora of career options, locally and wider afield.

Sheila Clark, CEO of Career Connect said: “It’s been wonderful to see how the ‘What Next?’ event has evolved over the past three years. The aim is to give students, who wouldn’t necessarily have access to certain networks or pathways, the chance to interact directly with employers and education providers. Face-to-face  connections with employers can play a critical part in young people’s choices.

“We wanted to create a comfortable and upbeat environment for young people to ask questions and receive information that’s directly relevant to them. It’s been really encouraging to see a growing range of exhibitors each year, from Wirral and beyond. We were delighted to deliver another successful event on behalf of Wirral Council.”
